TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s minimum wage will rise for the 11th consecutive year to NT$30,900 (US$965) per month and NT$205 per hour starting Jan. 1, 2027, following a 7.5-hour review meeting Thursday.
The monthly minimum wage will increase by 4.75% from the current NT$29,500, while the hourly rate will rise by 4.59% from NT$196, per ETtoday. The increase marks the first time the monthly minimum wage has exceeded NT$30,000.
The Minimum Wage Review Committee began its meeting at 10 a.m. and reached a decision at 5:30 p.m., with labor and management representatives divided over the size of the increase. The meeting was the longest since 2018, when deliberations lasted nine hours before an agreement was reached.
Labor Minister Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) said before the meeting that the committee would carefully consider consumer prices, economic growth, labor-market conditions, and industrial development when reviewing the new minimum wage, ETtoday reported. He said the ministry would seek to build consensus among the various parties.
Taiwan Confederation of Trade Unions Chair Tai Kuo-rong (戴國榮) called for a minimum wage increase of at least 7.77%, which would have raised the monthly wage to NT$31,792 and the hourly rate to NT$211.
Management representative Wu Tsung-ming (吳聰明), chair of the northern chapter of the Manufacturers United General Association of Industrial Parks, said that “only AI is doing well,” while other industries are struggling with weak business conditions.
