TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) called for deeper economic and strategic cooperation with Australia during a meeting with a visiting parliamentary delegation.
CNA reported that Hsiao received a bipartisan delegation led by Australian Senate Deputy President Slade Brockman. She thanked the lawmakers for supporting bilateral relations and for visiting to gain a deeper understanding of the country.
The vice president noted that the Indo-Pacific faces growing geopolitical challenges, while Taiwan continues to face military and gray-zone pressure. Changes in the global economy have also increased the need for like-minded partners to build stable and reliable supply chains.
She pointed to existing cooperation in energy, minerals, and other economic sectors. Both sides should build on those ties and expand collaboration into more areas, she added.
Strong demand for artificial intelligence and related hardware has also become a major driver of recent economic growth, according to Hsiao. She stressed that the benefits of that growth should be shared more broadly across society.
Recalling a visit to Australia about 20 years ago, Hsiao noted how much bilateral relations have developed since then. She hoped that both sides would continue building on that progress and deepen cooperation in the years ahead.
