TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said Wednesday he will head the campaign headquarters of DPP Yunlin County magistrate candidate Liu Chien-kuo (劉建國).
The announcement was made as the DPP’s Central Standing Committee met in Mailiao Township, where Liu presented his policy platform, per CNA. Former Yunlin County Magistrate Su Chih-fen (蘇治芬) will serve as chief supervisor of Liu’s campaign headquarters.
Lai said the elections are important because of major geopolitical changes and will affect Yunlin’s development and the country’s future. He praised Liu’s background in local politics and five terms as a legislator, per RTI.
Lai said Liu and Su have worked to secure central government funding for local projects, including the expansion of National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch’s Huwei campus. He said the central government does not favor particular local governments and will support local leaders who have a vision and are willing to cooperate.
Lai said the DPP faces challenges because it does not hold a majority in the legislature, making unity important in the year-end elections. He called on DPP candidates for county magistrate, county councilor, and township and city mayor to win their races across Yunlin, saying stronger local support would help improve residents’ lives.
