TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Power Company will begin releasing more than 30 years of marine ecological monitoring data next year through the Taiwan Biodiversity Information Alliance to support conservation and research.
Taipower said Thursday it signed a memorandum with TBIA to add its survey records to the alliance’s biodiversity platform for public access, per CNA.
The state utility said major power facilities are located along the coast and rely on seawater for cooling, prompting the company to assess environmental impacts, per UDN. Its first large-scale study focused on waters around Kuosheng Nuclear Power Plant in New Taipei.
Taipower said its efforts follow the international Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures approach, which promotes conservation beyond legally protected areas. It has incorporated conservation into its power facilities and received recognition for land and marine conservation efforts.
Adding survey records to TBIA’s network will expand their use beyond environmental management into scientific research, Taipower explained. TBIA integrates biodiversity data from government agencies and research institutions through a query system, making the information available to the public.
