TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan researchers are sharing their experience in tackling air pollution with experts from India and other Asian countries at a five-day seminar in New Delhi.
The seminar, which began Monday at Jawaharlal Nehru University, brings together researchers from Taiwan, India, Nepal, and other countries to discuss air quality and its effects on health, per CNA.
National Central University Department of Atmospheric Sciences Professor Wang Sheng-hsiang (王聖翔) said air pollution can travel across national borders, making cooperation between countries essential. He said scientists can use monitoring data to support government policymaking and help countries develop effective pollution-control measures.
Taiwan began studying transboundary air pollution about 30 years ago, with researchers developing expertise in pollution monitoring, Wang explained. He added that Taiwan’s experience could assist countries in South and Southeast Asia, where air pollution is a serious health concern.
Jawaharlal Nehru University School of Environmental Sciences Professor Umesh Chandra Kulshrestha said reducing pollution requires changes in people’s lifestyles and a shift toward cleaner energy. He said excessive consumption has increased production and energy use, contributing to environmental damage.
Deputy Representative to India Wang Wei-lung (王韋龍) said he hopes the seminar will promote Taiwan’s air pollution-control technologies and strengthen cooperation with India and other countries. Academia Sinica Associate Research Fellow Lin Yu-nung (林玉儂) said Academia Sinica hosts workshops yearly to share expertise overseas and hopes Taiwan can make an impact on its neighbors, per RTI.
