TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei ranked third among the world’s safest major cities in Visual Capitalist’s latest city safety ranking.
In the latest rankings, Taipei scored 83.4, slightly lower than 83.8 last year. It ranked ahead of Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Shenzhen, and Seoul.
In July, the city government said Time Out named Taipei the world’s safest city for female digital nomads in 2025. It also cited Taipei’s Special Mention in the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2026 and its reputation for public transportation, tourism, and safety.
Qatar’s capital Doha topped the list with a score of 84.6, followed by Dubai at 83.8. The ranking was based on Numbeo’s Safety Index, which uses user-reported data from the past five years.
Numbeo considers perceptions of crime and personal safety, including how safe people feel walking alone during the day or at night and concerns about robbery, theft, assault, harassment, and other crimes. It also factors in property crimes such as burglary and vandalism and violent crimes including assault, murder, and sexual offenses.
Asian and Middle Eastern cities dominated the top 10, with Hong Kong ranking fourth at 78.2, followed by Singapore at 77.7, Tokyo at 75.9, Shenzhen at 75.5, Riyadh at 75.4, Jeddah at 75.1, and Seoul at 74.6. No European city made the top 10, despite strong performance in global livability rankings.
The lowest-ranked cities were concentrated in Latin America and Africa, led by Caracas at 18.5, Johannesburg at 19.2, and Durban at 19.5. Other cities in the bottom 10 were Salvador, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Guayaquil, Cape Town, and Cali.
Brazil accounted for four cities in the bottom 10, while South Africa had three.
