TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) urged the legal community to continue defending Taiwan’s sovereignty at home and abroad.
Speaking at a lawyer banquet on Saturday, Lai said that in addition to political and military pressure, China is contorting UN Resolution 2758 by claiming Taiwan as part of its territory, per the Presidential Office.
He pointed out that the US State Department has publicly stated that World War II-era documents such as the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and the San Francisco Peace Treaty do not establish that Taiwan is part of China. UN Resolution 2758 addresses China’s representation at the UN and has nothing to do with Taiwan, Lai said.
The president said his foremost responsibility is to protect the nation, safeguard sovereignty, and defend its democracy and freedom.
As the need for AI law rises, building the necessary legal framework and resolving related issues will require collective efforts from all sectors, Lai said. Issues such as digital human rights and intellectual property rights will require greater involvement from legal professionals to help protect Taiwan’s key position in global supply chains, he said.
Lai added that Taiwan must pursue a smart, net-zero transition. He expressed hope that the legal community will help implement ESG-related regulations and help turn international green standards into a competitive advantage for the country's industries.
