TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A Chinese Public Security Bureau officer allegedly living in Taiwan was actually a convicted criminal who had already been deported, the Mainland Affairs Council said Friday.
An influencer posted a video online claiming to show the Chinese officer living freely in Taipei, per UDN. However, the council said the footage had been shot when the man was awaiting deportation to China.
He had resigned from the Public Security Bureau and been sentenced to prison for a robbery in China, the council said. In July 2025, he entered Taiwan illegally but was soon arrested by the Coast Guard Administration.
A court sentenced him to a prison term, which he served before being deported. Because his detention was to last longer than legally allowed, he was transferred to alternative detention before leaving Taiwan, explaining why the influencer obtained footage of him that made it look as if he were free, the council said.
The government called on the public not to spread inaccurate information, while it said it will continue to safeguard national security and social order, UDN reported. Legislators had tabled amendments to improve the supervision of alternative detention, the council added.
