TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The number of Taiwanese who have gone missing in China since 2024 has continued to rise, Straits Exchange Foundation Vice Chair Luo Wen-jia (羅文嘉) said Friday.
Luo said the foundation has handled cases involving Taiwanese facing detention, questioning, or other problems in China. There were 1,027 consultations and complaints recorded in 2025, up from 692 in 2024 and 588 in 2023, per Liberty Times. The increase reflects growing risks for Taiwanese traveling to China, he said.
According to figures supplied by the Mainland Affairs Council and cited by Luo, 426 Taiwanese went missing in China between January 2024 and Aug. 27, with 160 still unaccounted for. More than 200 were detained by Chinese authorities, he said.
"The government has a responsibility to tell people not to casually assume that most people who travel to China will be fine," Luo told Liberty Times. "You do not know when something might go wrong."
Luo said seven Taiwanese went missing in China during the final week of August. Two were later located, while the whereabouts of the other five are unknown.
