TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan has donated drones to diplomatic ally Palau as part of its efforts to expand technology training and cooperation with Pacific countries, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said Wednesday.
CNA reported that Lin presented the drones at an event in Palau attended by guests from several Pacific countries and territories. He said Taiwan hopes to use its technology and expertise to support regional development and expand cooperation in training and industry.
The donation followed drone demonstrations by International Youth Ambassadors during their visit to Palau. Lin said the demonstrations drew strong interest and showed how drone technology could be used in future cooperation projects.
Lin is leading a delegation to Palau from Aug. 27 to Wednesday for events related to the 55th Pacific Islands Forum summit. The regional meeting brings together Pacific countries and territories to discuss political, economic, and development issues.
Lin also highlighted agricultural and cultural ties between Taiwan and Pacific countries during the event. He brought taro pastries recommended by a Taichung bakery association, noting that taro is an important crop in both Taiwan and many Pacific communities.
He said pastry makers could visit Palau and work with local producers to create products using Palauan taro. Such cooperation could help develop local specialty products and increase the value of Palau’s agricultural goods.
Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. said friendship is built on trust and that Palau continues to stand with Taiwan because it has consistently supported Palau.
