TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s benchmark stock index extended its rebound Thursday after Nvidia reported better-than-expected earnings.
The Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Index (TAIEX) briefly moved above 46,000 points, but gains narrowed as trading activity remained subdued and some major technology stocks weakened. The index closed up 142.6 points, or 0.31%, at 45,975.22, according to Taiwan Index Plus and CTEE.
Turnover totaled NT$924.7 billion (US$29.2 billion). The total market capitalization of listed companies stood at NT$150.29 trillion, according to the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
Among the TAIEX’s largest-weighted stocks, TSMC fell 0.21% to close at NT$2,410. MediaTek declined 2.03% to NT$3,865.
Foxconn gained 2.23% to NT$252. Delta Electronics rose 1.14% to NT$1,770, while ASE added 2.2% to NT$605, according to Anue.
AI-related stocks gained ground after Nvidia’s revenue forecast signaled continued strength in demand across the sector. Among printed circuit makers, Compeq Manufacturing, Microcosm Technology, Asia Electronic Material, Glotech Industrial, Flexium Interconnect, and Nan Ya PCB all closed at their daily limit-ups.
Unimicron Technology, Kinsus Interconnect Technology, and Zhen Ding Technology Holding also closed higher. PCBs are boards that support electronic components and provide the electrical connections between them. The sector has been a key focus of market investors in recent years, supported by steady demand for AI computing infrastructure, according to Stockfeel.
Passive component makers Prosperity Dielectrics and Holy Stone Enterprise both reached their daily limits. Industry leader Yageo gained 3.35%, while Walsin Technology, Kaimei Electronic, and Ta-I Technology also posted notable gains.
The sector has benefited from growing demand for high-end multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) and high-performance inductors, as next-generation AI servers require more power and increasingly complex power-management systems, according to Sinotrade.
Following Apple’s announcement of a product launch event on Sept. 9, shares of optical lens provider Largan Precision reached their daily limit. The stock closed at NT$6,915, overtaking Wiwynn’s NT$6,815 to become the third-highest-priced stock among TAIEX-listed companies. Genius Electronic Optical gained 9.88%.
Bearing makers also attracted buying interest as foldable smartphones and tablets gain wider adoption globally. Orders for high-end bearings used in next-generation wearable devices and laptops from US customers have also increased. Shin Zu Shing gained 8.25%, while Jarllytec also closed higher.
Copper-clad laminate stocks moved lower. Iteq, Elite Material, and Taiwan Union Technology declined as investors locked in profits following substantial gains driven by AI-related demand.
Senior analyst Chien Po-yi (簡伯儀) said the market had initially expected turnover to exceed NT$1 trillion, but trading activity slowed as the session progressed. The TAIEX gave up some of its early gains, indicating continued selling pressure at higher levels, according to CTEE.
Despite the weaker trading activity, Chien noted that trading volume had steadily increased this week and that the index had closed higher for three consecutive sessions. Technical indicators have also strengthened from low levels, pointing to signs of a rebound.
Chien said the market outlook would remain positive as long as the index stays above its five-day moving average. However, if trading volume fails to expand, investors should watch for volatility at elevated levels and the risk of a pullback following recent gains.
