TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Tainan City Government announced Wednesday the opening of a robotics research center, according to a press release.
The city said that the center provides services in development, business networking, and investment. It noted that the center will be an integral part of robotics development as part of Liouying High-Tech Industrial Park's upcoming expansion.
Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said the science park will enter its phase 3 expansion in 2027. He said the central government will reassign more than 20 hectares of land from the Industrial Technology Research Institute and about 2.8 hectares from Taiwan Sugar.
Huang said that robots and drones are becoming next-generation tools for defense, manufacturing, and public services. He added that the city will work to attract more talent locally and abroad to boost global competitiveness.
Huang mentioned local firm Motionnex's robot that scouted a fire rescue in Guanmiao as an example. He noted that although the robot could not evacuate in time, firefighters assessed the situation from a safe distance.
For demonstrations, the center showcased 13 robotics applications across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and safety inspection. Highlights included autonomous mobile robots, service, and hospital worker bots.
An autonomous robot can move indoors and travel outside on most surfaces without rails. It can communicate with other units while connected to a shared platform for coordination.
Exhibitors including Motionnex showed how its motor and chassis were used in inspections. Tac Dynamics presented its automated stacking solution, which allows human workers to operate in liminal spaces. The Metal Industries Research and Development Centre and ITRI operated nursing and sanitation robots.
The city's economic development bureau said the center plans to expand robotics applications to healthcare, tourism, and agriculture. The city said the center marks the beginning of Liouying's industrial transformation and will introduce automation to local enterprises.
