TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Delta Electronics Inc. announced Wednesday that its largest energy storage facility in Taiwan has begun operations.
The facility, developed in partnership with Quintain Steel Co., is located in Tainan’s Madou Industrial Park. Covering 11,570 square meters, it has an 80-megawatt capacity and can store up to 305 megawatt-hours of electricity, enough to meet the daily electricity needs of about 30,000 households, according to CTEE.
The project provides frequency regulation services through state-owned Taiwan Power Co.'s Energy Time-shift and Dynamic Regulation Reserve (E-dReg) program. E-dReg involves storing electricity when solar and other renewable output is high during the day and releasing it as production declines in the evening, helping balance electricity supply and demand across Taiwan’s power grid, according to Reccessary.
Delta said Taiwan’s energy storage market is expected to develop across both front-of-the-meter (FTM) and behind-the-meter (BTM) systems, rather than being dominated by either segment. The commercial and industrial sector is expected to offer longer-term potential.
FTM systems are large-scale storage facilities connected directly to the power grid and are typically developed by utilities or independent power producers. BTM systems, by contrast, are installed at customer sites such as factories, commercial buildings, and homes, according to Seetel.
Delta expects BTM applications to have greater long-term growth potential as businesses place greater emphasis on energy independence and managing electricity consumption. These systems use smart energy management to optimize when electricity is stored and used, potentially reducing peak loads and electricity costs.
The company is also expanding its energy storage business into microgrid applications. Its solutions integrate solar power and fuel cells with energy storage and management systems to help large electricity users and energy-intensive industries manage power across multiple sites and improve supply reliability.
