TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — MediaTek, Ericsson, and AT&T have completed North America’s first real-world test of technology designed to reduce data interruptions when devices switch between mobile base stations.
The trial tested Ericsson’s L1/L2 Triggered Mobility (LTM) technology in a live network, with Ericsson serving as the radio access network supplier, per CNA. The company said LTM can reduce handover interruption times by up to 40% by triggering data transfers between base stations more quickly.
Handover interruption time refers to the brief loss of data connectivity that occurs when a device moves from one base station to another. Ericsson said reducing these interruptions could improve user experience and help prevent security risks and disruptions.
Ericsson has contributed to the development of LTM technology through 3GPP, the global organization responsible for mobile communications standards. The company said seamless handovers are becoming important as AI applications require predictable latency.
Ericsson explained that extended reality scene reconstruction, edge-assisted sensing, and industrial automation could benefit from reliable connections as devices move between networks.
