TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Metro said Friday it expects to complete the first phase of an artificial intelligence security system by the end of this year, according to a company press release.
The contract was awarded Wednesday. The first phase will integrate AI image recognition with 280 cameras and add 12 computing servers at Taipei Main Station and the M13 section of Zhongshan Underground Mall, south of Zhongshan Station.
The company said AI detection and analysis would help staff monitor abnormal situations in real time and respond promptly. AI image-recognition technology will be integrated into the existing surveillance network.
When the system detects smoke, flames, falls, unattended objects, weapons, or crowd gatherings, it will alert station and control center personnel so they can assess the situation and take appropriate action.
For the second phase, Taipei Metro selected 31 major stations and the M14 section of Zhongshan Underground Mall, north of Zhongshan Station, for installation from 2027 to 2028. The expansion would add 126 computing servers and enable image recognition on 2,901 existing cameras, with further coverage depending on performance reviews.
Taipei Metro said the upgrade was among the safety measures introduced after a man carried out a deadly random attack involving smoke bombs and a knife at Taipei Main and Zhongshan stations on Dec. 19, 2025. It said it would continue improving public safety through coordination with police and fire services, frontline staff training, protective equipment, passenger safety education, and technology-assisted management.
