TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s representative office in the Philippines has limited the daily number of applications for migrant worker visas to 250 due to a surge of interest, reports said Wednesday.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines ceased accepting applications due to flooding in Manila on Aug. 10 and the move of its consular offices on Aug. 11, per UDN. After the two days of closure, the number of applications surged to 450 per day, a number exceeding the capabilities of staff.
As a result, the office announced on Aug. 14 it was limiting the daily number to 250 applications, beginning on Aug. 17. Each broker was only allowed to apply for 30 workers per day.
The restrictions have begun to affect the operations of tech firms in Taiwan, UDN reported. However, the Taiwan office emphasized that the limit is only temporary and would be removed at a later time. The temporary measure intends to avoid long lines and complaints from other tenants in the building, officials said.
