TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Army will conduct its annual Lu Sheng exercise in October to bolster combat readiness.
The exercise will simulate a battle between a mechanized infantry brigade from northern Taiwan and an armored brigade from the south, CNA cited a military source as saying. The exercise will focus on firepower values, rules of engagement, enhancing small-unit mission command, and logistical support capabilities.
The inaugural Lu Sheng exercise was held last year, pitting the 542nd Armored Brigade against the 234th Mechanized Infantry Brigade for seven days in central Taiwan, CNA reported. The exercise abandoned the practice of substituting wheeled vehicles for armored platforms and adopted a no-script approach.
It also introduced several innovations, including the restoration of a “firepower value” system. This entailed assigning different lethality values to various weapons and platforms to make training more objective and realistic, per CNA.
This improved the accuracy of command decisions and post-exercise after-action reviews by providing more precise equipment and platform parameters.
Last year’s exercise also incorporated the use of Team Awareness Kits, enabling commanders at all levels to track friendly and opposing forces in real time and strengthening decentralized command and control capabilities, according to CNA.
