TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Pingtung County Councilor Sung Li-hua (宋麗華) was released on NT$3 million (US$93,423) bail Thursday amid an ongoing investigation into alleged fraud and money laundering involving her and her former husband, Cheng Jen-yu (鄭任祐).
Hsinchu District Court sentenced Cheng to four years in prison after finding him guilty of fraud involving investments in air conditioner compressors, per Liberty Times. Further investigation has identified additional victims, bringing the estimated amount of his alleged illegal gains to NT$500 million to NT$600 million.
Prosecutors also found evidence suggesting Sung may have been involved in Cheng’s fraud scheme, including millions of Taiwan dollars in suspected fraud proceeds that allegedly flowed into her bank account. KMT Legislator Su Ching-chuan (蘇清泉) was reportedly among those who fell victim to Cheng’s scheme, prompting Su’s wife to file a complaint against Cheng, per SETN.
A search of Sung’s residence uncovered tens of millions of Taiwan dollars and jewelry, according to prosecutors, per UDN. After questioning Sung and Cheng, prosecutors asked the court to detain both suspects.
The court approved the request to detain Cheng for two months but allowed Sung to post bail. Sung left Ciaotou District Court after a family member paid the bail, per CNA.
