TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung’s popcorn chicken festival is set to return in October, with the city inviting food vendors from across Taiwan to showcase creative takes on the popular fried snack.
Often enjoyed as a late-night snack, popcorn chicken, or xian su ji, has become a symbol of Taiwan’s vibrant culinary culture. Its appeal lies in its versatility and creativity, making it a highlight of Kaohsiung’s nighttime economy, according to Ettoday.
Now in its sixth year, the festival will be held at Far Eastern Department Store on Oct. 24 and 25. This year’s theme will center on salted egg yolk, with around 50 fried-food and specialty food brands from across Taiwan expected to participate, according to CNA.
Each vendor must develop at least one limited-edition dish featuring the ingredient. Salted egg yolks are cured with salt, which gives them a rich, savory flavor and distinctive sandy texture, according to FoodNext.
Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau Director-General Kao Min-lin (高閔琳) said last year’s festival attracted more than 120,000 visitors over two days. She added that this year’s theme aims to encourage vendors to experiment with different ingredient combinations and seasonings while showcasing the variety of fried foods.
During the festival, the Sanduo Shopping District, nearby department stores, and local businesses will also offer joint promotions and shopping deals. The initiative aims to draw visitors to surrounding commercial areas and nearby attractions in addition to the festival venue.
