TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The New Taipei District Court on Tuesday sentenced Chinese spouse Xu Chunying (徐春鶯) to seven years in prison for offenses including violating the Anti-Infiltration Act by campaigning for election candidates on China’s orders.
Xu served as an official in the TPP and spoke on stage at rallies for Taipei mayoral candidate Huang Shan-shan (黃珊珊) and presidential candidate Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), per Liberty Times. The court found her guilty of five offenses, also including fraud, irregular financial dealings, and helping a Chinese citizen enter Taiwan illegally.
Xu frequently reported back to officials in China about the political situation in Taiwan and the activities of Chinese spouses, according to prosecutors. Chinese officials instructed her to play an active role in the campaigns for the 2022 local elections and the 2024 presidential and legislative elections.
The investigation into her activities on behalf of China also uncovered illegal currency exchanges from 2020 to 2025, Liberty Times reported. She made NT$240,000 (US$7,400) from transactions in violation of the Banking Act, prosecutors said.
They also accused her of obtaining the help of Chinese officials to claim she had renounced Chinese residency documents, allowing her to feature on a TPP list of legislative candidates in 2024. Her actions damaged public trust in Taiwan’s democratic system, prosecutors said.
The district court on Tuesday also sentenced Xu’s daughter to one year in prison, suspended for four years, in a case involving a fraudulent NT$26.97 million loan.
