TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Siliconware Precision Industries broke ground Tuesday on its Douliu plant in Yunlin County, which will expand its advanced chip packaging and testing capacity.
The NT$100 billion (US$3.1 billion) facility in Yunlin Technology Industrial Park will cover six hectares and is expected to create more than 2,200 jobs at full capacity, per CNA. The first phase is scheduled to begin operations in 2028, and the plant is expected to adopt CoWoS advanced packaging technology.
SPIL Vice Chair Chang Yen-chun (張衍鈞) said the company has been expanding plants in Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, and Tainan to prepare for the AI boom. He said the Douliu plant will serve as a key hub for advanced packaging and testing for the global AI industry.
Economics Minister Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) said the investment will strengthen Taiwan's advanced packaging capabilities, improve process integration and product yields, and expand capacity for high-end packaging technologies. He said the project will also help strengthen Taiwan's semiconductor industry and its position in the global supply chain.
SPIL’s Huwei plant broke ground in November 2022 and began operations in September last year, per Liberty Times. The company said it has also worked with local universities and vocational schools to train semiconductor talent, including an equipment-focused program with National Formosa University that has trained more than 200 students.
SPIL said it is also opening opportunities for young people from non-STEM backgrounds to pursue careers in the technology industry. The company said these efforts are aimed at retaining talent in Yunlin as it expands its semiconductor operations.
