TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s benchmark stock index opened higher and extended gains on Monday, briefly climbing above the 45,000-point mark.
The Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Index (TAIEX) reached an intraday high of 45,219.4 points before gains eased toward the close. It ended up 702.85 points, or 1.59%, at 44,928.76, according to Taiwan Index Plus and CTEE.
Turnover totaled NT$847.4 billion. The total market capitalization of listed companies stood at NT$146.85 trillion, according to the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
All of the index’s most heavily weighted stocks posted gains. TSMC edged up 0.42% to close at NT$2,380.
ASE climbed 7.69% to NT$630. MediaTek added 1.54% to NT$3,960, while Foxconn rose 1.73% to NT$264.5.
Delta Electronics hit its daily limit-up at NT$1,815 following reports that Nvidia was planning to invest NT$96.7 billion in US power infrastructure developer Lancium, boosting related shares. Lite-On Technology, STL Technology, and K.S. Terminals also reached their daily limits, while Dynapack International Technology gained 9.31%, according to Reuters.
Panel makers saw active trading after market reports suggested TSMC was considering buying factory facilities from AUO to expand its advanced packaging capacity. Innolux, AUO, and HannStar Display all reached their daily limits.
Memory companies also attracted buying interest as DRAM and NAND flash prices rose, while demand for high-bandwidth memory used in AI servers and high-end DDR5 memory increased. Strong July revenue figures from several companies further encouraged purchases, according to Sinotrade.
Nanya Technology, Winbond Electronics, and Macronix International all hit their daily limits. Phison Electronics, PSMC, ESMT, and Team Group also posted gains.
After a period of consolidation, funds returned to major passive component makers. Market leader Yageo gained 6.11%, while Holy Stone Enterprise reached its daily limit and Walsin Technology rose 8.96%.
Gains among major US optical communications companies helped lift related shares. LandMark Optoelectronics, Fiber Optic Communications, and LuxNet all hit their daily limits.
The airline sector came under profit-taking pressure as the summer travel peak neared its end and passenger yields eased from high levels. China Airlines fell 9.11%, EVA Airways declined 3.94%, and Starlux Airlines lost 2.58%.
Chen Shuang-ji (陳双吉), manager of the Fubon Taiwan Core Semi ETF, said the session’s gains were led by heavyweight and high-priced shares. This indicated a clear improvement in market sentiment, according to CTEE.
Analysts noted that the TAIEX has rebounded by nearly 6,000 points from its recent low and is gradually approaching the 45,000-point level, where many investors are still holding positions bought at higher prices. If trading volume fails to expand, the market could face short-term fluctuations and a pullback.
Looking ahead, Chen said signals from the US Federal Reserve’s September meeting on interest rate policy will affect global capital flows and investor risk appetite. They will also be a key factor in determining whether Taiwan's market can maintain its upward trend in the fourth quarter and make further attempts at new highs.
In terms of industry trends, AI development is moving beyond model training toward inference and commercial applications, supporting continued growth in computing needs. As server architectures evolve, opportunities are also extending beyond GPUs to CPUs, advanced manufacturing processes, advanced packaging, and testing, expanding the range of semiconductor suppliers that could benefit.
