TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Third Theater Command conducted an integrated air defense drill in Taoyuan on Saturday, the fourth day of the Han Kuang military exercise.
The drill simulated an enemy conducting joint strikes while using air cover to escort landing vessels toward Taiwan’s nearshore waters, Military News Agency reported.
Units deployed radar and communication vehicles and land-based Sky Sword II missile systems. Using radar to track aerial targets, the units identified targets and assessed threats. An engagement control system then assigned targets and directed the Sky Sword II missile system to intercept enemy fighter aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones.
The command said that during joint anti-landing operations, air defense units are tasked with protecting ground forces and key areas, according to MNA. They must deploy air defense assets and firepower in response to evolving threats to create layered protection, it added.
The command also staged an anti-airborne assault drill in Guandu, simulating an enemy assault on the Guandu Plain. Troops drove Humvees equipped with 20 mm cannons and 40 mm grenade launchers to tactical positions to establish an air defense fire network.
Soldiers also launched reconnaissance drones to carry out battlefield surveillance and provide real-time awareness of enemy movements.
