TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan will attend the Pacific Islands Forum summit in diplomatic ally Palau next month, reports said Saturday.
An official above the rank of deputy minister will lead the delegation to the Aug. 30-Sept. 4 event, per Liberty Times. Taiwan acquired the status of development partner of the forum in 1993, but last year, it was not invited by the summit host the Solomon Islands, while China was present.
Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa reportedly described Taiwan as an important partner, adding that it would be able to attend this year’s summit. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Taiwan will continue to deepen collaboration with forum members.
Details about the Taiwan delegation and its activities at the summit will be revealed at an appropriate time, per Liberty Times.
Taiwan donated NT$63.68 million (US$2 million) to the Pacific Islands Forum in July. The sum was a contribution to the group’s 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
