TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 65-year-old woman was injured Friday when scaffolding and part of a ceiling collapsed at Mitsui Shopping Park Lalaport Nangang in Taipei, authorities said.
The collapse occurred on the mall’s fifth floor, where a children’s occupational-experience facility operated by KidZania was undergoing interior renovation, per CNA. Construction materials reportedly fell to lower floors, alarming shoppers.
The injured woman had a swelling to the back of her head and was taken to Tri-Service General Hospital in Taipei’s Neihu District. She was conscious, according to CNA.
Taipei’s Construction Management Office inspected the site and said the incident raised public-safety concerns and may have violated Article 77 of Taiwan’s Building Act. The department said it would fine the mall’s operator up to NT$300,000 (US$9,500) and require corrective measures, UDN reported.
The city government also instructed the operator to accept responsibility for compensation to the injured customer. Labor-safety officials were sent to inspect working conditions at the renovation site. The investigation into the cause of the collapse was continuing Saturday.
