TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will temporarily slow mobile internet service in central and northern Taiwan next week as part of this year’s urban resilience exercise, the National Communications Commission said Thursday.
CNA reported that the drill will run from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in central Taiwan on Monday and northern Taiwan on Thursday. The exercise will test communications during an emergency by reducing mobile internet speeds.
The central Taiwan drill will cover Miaoli County, Taichung, Nantou County, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi, and Chiayi County. The northern Taiwan drill will cover Yilan County, Keelung, Greater Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Hsinchu County.
The commission will send a nationwide disaster warning message at 2:30 p.m. Friday to inform the public about the drill. It said people should not be alarmed by the message and should prepare in advance if they expect to be in a drill area, per Liberty Times.
Voice calls, including 110 and 119 emergency calls, will continue to work normally during the exercise. Text messages and disaster warning messages will also remain available.
The commission advised people to limit mobile internet use and use fixed-line internet or indoor Wi-Fi when possible. It said important downloads, online transactions, and mobile payments should be completed before or after the drill to avoid disruptions.
