TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Transportation and Communications will decide next year whether Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport’s Terminal 1 should be demolished and rebuilt or upgraded, reports said Tuesday.
The terminal has been in use since 1979 and is approaching its stated 50-year service life, per UDN. The building underwent an upgrade from 2010 to 2013, increasing its annual passenger capacity from 12 million to 15 million.
The transportation ministry said Tuesday that NT$600 billion (US$18.5 billion) would be needed over the next 20 years to complete several projects. These include Terminal 3 and the third runway at Taoyuan Airport, a new terminal at Kaohsiung’s Xiaogang Airport, the expansion of Taichung Airport, and work at airports on Taiwan’s outlying islands.
Evaluation and planning for the future of Taoyuan Airport’s Terminal 1 have already begun, but more detailed plans will not be released until work on Terminal 3 is completed at the end of 2027, the ministry said. There is no official budget for the project yet, but annual revenue from increased airport service fees was estimated at NT$25.6 billion and transit fees at NT$1.7 billion, per UDN.
