TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TSMC pledged NT$51.3 million (US$1.6 million) to support earthquake relief in Kumamoto, Japan, after saying its Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing fab there had fully recovered from last week’s quake.
The company said in a post on X that the donation aims to help affected residents rebuild their lives, while the TSMC Charity Foundation has launched an employee fundraising campaign to support recovery efforts, per CNA.
TSMC said it has operated in Japan for nearly 30 years and has built close relationships with local suppliers, partners, and customers, per UDN. The company added that Kumamoto has become one of its key global production bases, supported by the Japanese government and regional supply chain partners.
The company said it will monitor conditions in Kumamoto and provide additional support when needed. It said it hopes to demonstrate its commitment to the local community through concrete action.
Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing’s first wafer fab began mass production at the end of 2024 using specialty process technologies. Its second fab in Kumamoto is expected to begin production in 2028 and will use 3 nm process technology.
