TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US Representative Michael McCaul, former chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is visiting Taiwan from Aug. 2-7 for talks with top government officials.
During his trip, McCaul will meet President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and attend a banquet hosted by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), according to the foreign ministry. He will exchange views on Taiwan-US relations, regional security, and cross-strait developments.
McCaul will also deliver a keynote speech at the Ketagalan Forum, where he will share his experience advancing Indo-Pacific security and strengthening Taiwan-US ties in Congress.
McCaul served as chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee from 2023 to 2024. During that time, he led a congressional delegation to Taiwan in April 2023 and headed a delegation to attend Lai’s presidential inauguration in May 2024, the foreign ministry said. This marks McCaul’s third visit to Taiwan.
The foreign ministry said McCaul has long promoted Taiwan-US security cooperation and is a member of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus. It said he has consistently supported legislation to deepen bilateral relations, including signing a joint letter urging the US government to condemn China’s “Ethnic Unity Promotion Law.”
Lin welcomed McCaul’s visit and noted the recent string of visits to Taiwan by bipartisan US lawmakers, saying they underscored strong cross-party support for Taiwan. The foreign ministry said it will continue working with Congress and other partners to deepen cooperation and promote peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific.
