TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will work with Japan and other like-minded partners to uphold peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said Friday.
In a meeting with Japanese House of Councillors member Takinami Hirofumi, Lin said Taiwan and Japan share universal values such as freedom and the rule of law, according to the foreign ministry. The two countries maintain close cooperation in trade, technology, culture, tourism, and local exchanges, and continue to strengthen mutual trust through parliamentary diplomacy, he added.
Takinami thanked Taiwan’s government and people for their concern and prompt assistance following the earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan. He said the relationship between Taiwan and Japan is like that of family members.
Takinami is a director of the House of Councillors Committee on Land and Transport and previously served as state minister of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, per the foreign ministry. The ministry described him as a promoter of Taiwan-Japan exchanges and a key pro-Taiwan figure in Japan.
The foreign ministry said it will continue to deepen Taiwan-Japan relations through parliamentary diplomacy and mutual trust. It added that the two countries will work together to promote regional democracy, peace, and prosperity.
