TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s foreign ministry will donate NT$5 million (US$167,000) to support earthquake relief and rebuilding in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture, CNA reported Friday.
The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Tuesday afternoon, leaving people dead or injured and causing buildings to collapse. Roads and other infrastructure were also damaged, while aftershocks remain a threat in the affected area.
The ministry also launched a public fundraising campaign. The Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund opened a special account to collect donations from individuals and organizations.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said Taiwan and Japan have long supported each other after natural disasters. He said Taiwan would continue helping Japan with relief and rebuilding efforts.
Lin encouraged people and organizations across Taiwan to contribute to the campaign. The donations will help affected residents rebuild their homes and resume their daily lives.
