TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Contract manufacturer Wistron said Thursday it is expanding its AI infrastructure with a 10 MW computing center in Tainan that is expected to begin operations in 2027.
Wistron Chief Technology Officer Shen Ching-yao (沈慶堯) said construction of the building is expected to be completed in October, with equipment installation scheduled for the first quarter of next year, per CNA. The center will support Wistron’s operations, academic research at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and national projects, per MoneyDJ.
Shen discussed the project at the inauguration of the TAIONE Open Source Foundation, where he also addressed Taiwan’s development of AI technology and open-source ecosystems. He said AI tools have changed software development, shifting it from traditional coding toward greater reliance on open-source platforms.
Open-source technology has become essential for companies developing AI, Shen said, though businesses must find the right balance. Companies need strategies for integrating open-source and proprietary technologies, he added.
Shen said Taiwan has a strong advantage in AI hardware due to its semiconductor supply chain, but still faces a gap with global leaders in computing applications and software development. He said the industry must strengthen software capabilities to expand Taiwan’s influence beyond hardware.
He urged Taiwanese companies to participate in open-source communities and build supportive development environments. Doing so would help Taiwan play a larger role in the global AI ecosystem, he said.
