TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The American Institute in Taiwan said Thursday that a visiting US congressional delegation reflects Washington’s commitment to stronger ties with Taiwan and a free and open Indo-Pacific, CNA reported.
According to the foreign ministry, US Representative Young Kim is leading the bipartisan delegation during its Thursday-Saturday visit. The group also includes Representatives Suhas Subramanyam, Michael Cloud, and Randy Feenstra.
The lawmakers will meet President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and other senior government officials. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) will host a dinner for the delegation.
The talks will cover Taiwan-US relations, regional security, trade, and investment, AIT said. The two sides will also discuss other issues of shared concern.
The foreign ministry said Kim has long supported Taiwan and regional security. She has promoted several Taiwan-friendly proposals in Congress, including measures aimed at deterring Chinese aggression and opposing Beijing’s interpretation of UN Resolution 2758.
The foreign ministry welcomed the delegation and said Taiwan would continue building support in the US Congress. It also said Taiwan plans to expand cooperation with the US across a range of areas.
UN Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, recognized the People’s Republic of China as the only lawful representative of China at the United Nations. However, the resolution does not explicitly decide Taiwan’s sovereignty or say Taiwan is part of China.
