TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan convenience store chains and payment platforms have launched donation campaigns to support emergency relief and rebuilding after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto, Japan.
CNA reported Wednesday that the earthquake struck Tuesday, damaging buildings and roads and causing power and water outages. Many residents were forced to evacuate as rescue and recovery operations continued.
7-Eleven is accepting donations through the OpenPoint app and ibon machines at its stores until Aug. 31. The money will support emergency relief and rebuilding, while Taiwan-based charity the Mustard Seed Mission has provided US$10,000 in initial aid.
FamilyMart customers can donate through the “My Charity” section of the company’s app or through FamiPort machines until Aug. 31. The Mustard Seed Mission will manage the funds and work with AAR Japan to provide emergency supplies and other immediate assistance in Kumamoto.
Hi-Life is accepting donations through Life-ET machines at about 1,800 stores across Taiwan. The campaign, which also runs until Aug. 31, will support emergency aid, temporary housing, psychological support, and rebuilding.
Supermarket chain PX Mart has also opened donation channels through its PXPay Plus and PX Pay apps. Users can contribute with reward points or points from participating credit cards, giving the public more ways to support relief efforts.
