TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Digital Affairs Minister Lin Yi-ching (林宜敬) said Wednesday that Taiwan’s sovereign AI development could create new opportunities as more countries seek trusted AI solutions beyond major technology powers.
Speaking at the CommonWealth Summit, Lin said the AI Evaluation Center has assessed 163 large language models based on three criteria: traditional Chinese comprehension, understanding of Taiwanese society, and alignment with Taiwan’s values, per RTI. He said the evaluations aim to help users better understand the capabilities and risks of different AI models.
Taiwan is promoting sovereign AI applications in fields such as legal and financial services, and the AI Evaluation Center will evaluate specialized models to meet industry needs, Lin said, per CNA.
Lin said sovereign AI involves both whether a model can reflect a country’s perspective and whether its computing infrastructure operates under domestic laws. Taiwan is also promoting AI computing center projects while developing Taiwan-focused AI models and evaluation systems.
As more countries develop sovereign AI, some are seeking cooperation with Taiwan beyond partnerships with the US and China, Lin said. He added that Taiwan can provide integrated solutions covering computing infrastructure, cybersecurity, and AI evaluation.
Lin said AI computing centers will also create opportunities for Taiwan’s software industry, particularly in resource management and related services. He said Taiwanese companies are developing sovereign AI applications in finance and healthcare, and standardization could help turn these solutions into exportable services.
