TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan City Government said Wednesday it has begun plans to convert idle water utility land near the high-speed rail to support the growing Southern Semiconductor S Corridor.
The city government has formally launched a plan to rezone the land from water utility use to industrial use. The draft has been made available for public viewing, and a public hearing was held July 15 at the Gueiren District Office.
Tainan City Urban Development Bureau Director-General Lin Lung-chuan (林榮川) said the area remained unused as the regional water distribution network matured. He said major projects, including Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City and the Tainan Exhibition Center, have driven demand, prompting the city to rezone the land.
The bureau said the proposal would repurpose the zone for industrial use to attract high-tech industries such as AI, cybersecurity, and energy. The plan also strengthens controls on open space and parking access to improve public safety while balancing economic growth and commuter safety.
