TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection Co. has exported its toll payment system to India, reports said Wednesday.
The first Multi-Level Free Flow toll system has begun operating in India, per CNA. The Indian government plans to convert 140 toll stations across the country, or 10% of its traditional toll stations, to the new system.
The company, a member of the Far Eastern Group, said it worked with FETC International, the Institute for Information Industry, and six Taiwanese companies to develop the toll system. It said all phases of the project, from design to implementation, reflected Taiwan’s smart transportation capabilities.
Company executives said the system is intended to allow vehicles to pass toll stations without barriers and without slowing down. The wide variety of vehicles in India, from small tuk-tuks not subject to tolls to 20-wheel trucks, posed challenges different from those in Taiwan, CNA reported.
India is the second foreign market after Thailand to adopt Taiwan’s electronic toll system.
