TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Representative to the US Alexander Yui (俞大㵢) honored the late US Senator Lindsey Graham as a longtime defender of Taiwan’s freedom and security, CNA reported Tuesday.
Yui attended Graham’s funeral in Washington and told the press that Taiwan wanted to pay its highest respects to one of its strongest allies. Throughout his time in Congress, Graham supported Taiwan’s democracy, freedom, and security through letters, proposed legislation, and public statements.
After Russia invaded Ukraine, Graham warned that Taiwan must not become the target of a similar invasion. Yui said the senator also paid close attention to Taiwan’s defense needs.
Graham visited Taiwan three times during his political career. On his final visit in 2022, he led a delegation of senior US lawmakers to demonstrate support for Taiwan.
Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, was appointed to complete the remainder of his Senate term through January 2027. Yui said Taiwan’s representative office would remain in contact with her because she shared her brother’s support for Taiwan.
Graham died suddenly on July 11 at age 71. He had met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine one day earlier.
