TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan and Lithuania have resumed talks for an economic cooperation action plan following the formation of a new coalition government in Lithuania.
Lithuania’s foreign ministry said it is focused on bolstering economic cooperation with Taiwan and that it hopes to finalize the action plan as soon as possible, per Lithuania’s LRT.
Top foreign policy adviser Asta Skaisgiryte announced the plan in March, saying that Lithuania had high hopes for closer economic cooperation with Taiwan after it opened its Taiwanese Representative Office in Vilnius in 2021. However, officials recently said that Taiwanese investment has been underwhelming, LRT reported.
Lithuania opened a trade office in Taipei in 2022.
Taiwan Envoy Constance Wang (王雪虹) and Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidmantas Verbickas discussed the plan in April. The agreement covers semiconductors, the defense industry, technology, science and innovation, finance, agriculture, and cooperation projects in Ukraine, according to LRT.
Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) has expressed support for the plan. In April, Lin said Taiwan and Lithuania are “important partners” that cherish freedom and democracy.
He highlighted that Taiwan imported approximately NT$1.89 billion (US$60 million) worth of goods from Lithuania last year, a 63.47% increase from 2024. That same year, Taiwan’s exports to Lithuania reached NT$3.31 billion, up 13.6% from 2024.
