TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) signed a memorandum of understanding with Gdansk on Thursday, expanding cultural and industrial cooperation.
The delegation arrived on Tuesday and was received by city and trade officials. The delegation then toured the Gdansk Science and Technology Park and the Pomeranian Science and Technology Park in Gdynia on Wednesday, followed by a meeting with the Taiwan-Poland Chamber of Commerce, where TAIPO expressed an intent to open an office for robotics cooperation.
Huang said the agreement is a major step in building bilateral exchanges between the two governments. He added that Tainan is a major base for semiconductor and robotics manufacturing.
He said that Pomerania has been developing similar industries, and the partnership is expected to boost business exchanges and opportunities tied to Industry 4.0. He added that the agreement reflects steady Taiwanese-Polish cooperation and is expected to expand beyond technology and trade into culture, education, tourism, and agriculture.
Industry 4.0 involves the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing. It is full automation with autonomous installations operating around-the-clock with minimal human involvement.
Tainan has two Polish sister cities: Elblag in 2004, where polymath Nicolaus Copernicus is laid to rest. Lodz became the second sister city in 2025 and is Poland's third-largest city.
