TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Telecom said Wednesday it has signed a two-year partnership with Japan’s Fujitsu and its group company 1Finity to accelerate all-photonic network technology development in Taiwan.
Chunghwa Telecom said the cooperation builds on a strategic partnership with Fujitsu launched in 2024, per CNA. The companies will conduct all-photonic network verification and technical research in Taiwan based on Fujitsu’s Innovative Optical and Wireless Network concept, which aims to improve network efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
All-photonic networks use light to transmit and process data instead of electrical pulses, per CNBC. The technology can reduce power consumption while increasing transmission speeds.
Under the memorandum of understanding, the three companies will deepen collaboration on next-generation communications infrastructure. They plan to use Chunghwa Telecom’s submarine cable systems to verify APN technology and evaluate its potential to support distributed data centers amid growing data traffic and energy demand.
The companies will also explore quantum technology applications, including improving security for network control in distributed data centers. Chunghwa Telecom said the cooperation aims to build smarter, more energy-efficient, and more resilient optical communications networks.
Chunghwa Telecom Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Yang Hui-chi (楊慧琪) said the company will work with Fujitsu and 1Finity to advance APN technology and develop reliable network and quantum-secure communications solutions in the AI era.
