TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Shipbuilder CSBC Corp., Taiwan, on Tuesday handed over the fifth in a series of six 1,000-ton patrol cutters to the Coast Guard Administration.
The ship, named Penghu, was handed over during a ceremony at the company’s Keelung shipyard. At the same event, Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲) named the sixth and final ship in the series Keelung, per UDN.
The cutters have a top speed of 24 knots and a range of 11,112 kilometers. Penghu is also equipped with four high-pressure water cannons.
With the six-cutter program nearing completion, construction of three of six 5,000-ton high-latitude ocean patrol vessels has been transferred from Kaohsiung to Keelung, Kuan said.
Both types of vessel are part of a government plan to build 141 ships for the Coast Guard between 2018 and 2027. The budget for the plan totals NT$42.6 billion (US$1.31 billion).
