TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said Monday that abundant sunlight is helping the city attract investment and support high-tech industry growth.
The Tainan City Government said the city’s summer sun and established renewable energy supply chain align with central government policy. It added that standardized management and transparency help ensure solar projects are carried out properly.
Huang said AI, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing are driving demand for green electricity, making renewable energy vital to global competitiveness. He said Tainan is part of the semiconductor S corridor, linking the Southern Taiwan Science Park and Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City, which hosts 166 firms and has a 90.22% occupancy rate.
Tainan City Economic Development Bureau Director-General Chang Ting-yuan (張婷媛) said installed solar capacity had reached 5 GW as of late June, with estimated annual output of 6.38 billion kilowatt-hours. That is more than 30% of the Southern Taiwan Science Park’s annual green power demand, she said.
Chang said the city has tightened solar infrastructure supervision rules, requiring routine inspections and compliance with maintenance and community commitments.
She said new guidelines cover community consultation and self-management standards for solar installation projects. The rules are intended to strengthen efficiency and transparency, Chang said.
Tainan will continue improving its business environment to attract and retain key industries, the city government said. It said the goal is to create a sustainable cycle in which industry fuels the economy and economic growth advances development.
