TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday congratulated Andy Burnham on becoming the UK’s new prime minister.
Burnham formally took office after meeting King Charles III on Monday, per Newtalk. In a post on X, Lai said Taiwan highly values the UK’s continued support for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Lai added that Taiwan hopes to strengthen further bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, energy, and investment.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) said the UK is an important like-minded partner for Taiwan, with both countries sharing values including freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights, per Tai Sounds. He said cooperation has expanded in recent years across trade and investment, technology innovation, security resilience, and people-to-people exchanges.
Hsiao said the ministry will continue working closely with the new UK government to expand mutually beneficial cooperation. He added that Taiwan and the UK would work together to uphold a rules-based international order and promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
