TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Chan Hao-ching (詹皓晴) and Japanese partner Kato Miyu captured the women's doubles title at the WTA 250 Athens Open on Sunday, ending Chan's more than two-year WTA Tour title drought.
The 32-year-old Chan and 31-year-old Kato entered the tournament as the top seeds and advanced to the doubles final, per SET News. They defeated fourth-seeded Maia Lumsden of Britain and China's Tang Qianhui 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 10-7 to claim the title.
Chan and Kato raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set after an early break of serve but surrendered the advantage and needed a tiebreak after failing to convert multiple set points. They regained control in the tiebreak to take the opener before dropping the second set after losing two service games.
The deciding match tiebreak saw Chan and Kato jump to a 4-1 lead before their opponents narrowed the gap, SET News reported. The top seeds steadied themselves late to close out a 10-7 victory and secure the championship.
The title was Chan's first on the WTA Tour since winning the Stuttgart Open in April 2024 and the 22nd of her career. During the intervening period, she reached five WTA doubles finals but finished runner-up each time.
