TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s financial sector raised NT$221.71 billion (US$6.85 billion), 32.67% from a year earlier, through capital increases and bond issuance in the first half of the year, according to Financial Supervisory Commission statistics.
Banks accounted for the largest share at NT$109.4 billion, followed by insurers at NT$73 billion and securities firms at NT$39.31 billion, per UDN. The FSC said fundraising by securities firms reached its highest level since 2023, driven by strong capital market activity.
According to the FSC, banks completed NT$6.3 billion in cash capital increases and issued NT$103.1 billion in bonds, per CNA. The regulator said higher bond issuance largely reflected refinancing of maturing debt, while lower capital increases were tied to banks’ capital planning. CTBC Bank, Taipei Fubon Bank, and Export-Import Bank were the largest bond issuers.
The insurance sector raised NT$73 billion, up 38% from a year earlier, entirely through bond issuance by six life insurers. The FSC said insurers raise funds based on financing costs, market conditions, and business needs, adding that fundraising levels do not necessarily reflect a company’s financial health. Fubon Life Insurance, KGI Life Insurance, and Cathay Life Insurance were the largest issuers.
Securities firms raised NT$39.31 billion, up nearly NT$38.9 billion from a year earlier, including NT$5.16 billion through capital increases and NT$34.15 billion through bond issuance. The FSC said some brokerages boosted capital to support business expansion and meet regulatory net worth requirements, while most bond offerings were used to refinance existing debt.
Morgan Stanley Securities, Mega Securities and BNP Paribas Securities completed the largest capital increases in the first half, while KGI Securities, Yuanta Securities, and Fubon Securities led bond issuance.
