TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan will invest NT$673.8 billion (US$20.95 billion) to upgrade its airports in preparation for welcoming 100 million passengers in 2045, reports said Thursday.
The National Development Council approved the proposal from the Ministry of Transportation and Communication Thursday, per UDN. The program aims to upgrade all 17 public airports in the country, turning them into the most competitive and resilient group of airports in East Asia, the ministry said.
Taoyuan International Airport Corporation will provide NT$491.6 billion, the Civil Aeronautics Administration Operating Fund NT$180 billion, and the military NT$2.2 billion, according to UDN. The Cabinet still needs to give the plan its stamp of approval.
The ministry set 2045 as its target date for the program, forecasting 100 million international passengers passing through Taiwan’s airports in addition to 13 million domestic travelers and 4.02 million tonnes in cargo.
The upgrade included the works in progress for a third terminal and a third runway at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. In Kaohsiung, there are plans to move a taxiway, build a new terminal, and add parking space, UDN reported. The ministry program will also fund improvements at airports outlying islands.
