TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Directorate-General of Personnel Administration told lawmakers Wednesday that 99.8% of government employees had signed a statement confirming they they do not hold Chinese identity or residency documents, per UDN.
Of the more than 620,000 employees, 95 civil servants have not yet signed the statement. At the same time, the directorate-general also denied allegations that those who have not signed were punished excessively.
Even so, KMT Legislator Weng Hsiao-ling (翁曉玲) proposed to cut NT$30 million (US$932,000) and freeze 20% from the directorate-general’s budget. She said she wanted the department to make clear there would be no disciplinary action for those who did not sign.
The directorate-general said the demand for public employees to hold only Taiwan citizenship corresponded to government practice around the world, the UDN report said. Requests to sign the document this year would only apply to new recruits or to state employees changing jobs within the government structure.
