TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Mainland Affairs Council said Tuesday that China’s new ethnic unity law could increase political risks for cross-strait exchanges by requiring activities involving Taiwan to align with Beijing’s agenda.
MAC Deputy Minister Shen Yu-chung (沈有忠) made the remarks at a seminar on the impact of China’s Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity, hosted by Tunghai University in Taichung, per CNA.
Shen said the law reflects the CCP’s efforts to legalize and normalize what he described as cross-border repression targeting Taiwan. He said such actions could undermine the status quo and pose challenges to Taiwan’s national security and social stability.
Shen said the law contains vague provisions that could allow Beijing’s ideological control to extend overseas, per UDN. He added that the legislation has drawn concerns from the international community, including Japan, the US, and the European Parliament, over its potential impact on human rights and democratic freedoms.
Shen said the law also reinforces Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s centralized leadership domestically. He added that, in cross-strait relations, the legislation could constrain exchanges and expand cross-border repression.
