TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan opened a new road to an Army training base in Guanmiao District on Tuesday, improving military and local transport, CNA reported.
The city government said the 2.9-kilometer road connects the northern side of the Tangshan military base with Provincial Highway 19A. It is the third main access road developed as part of the Army Artillery Training Command’s relocation from Yongkang District to Guanmiao.
The project also upgraded a 4.9-kilometer road linking the base with three nearby military training grounds. Together, the two road sections are 7.8 kilometers long and 8 meters wide.
Construction began in April 2023 and was completed ahead of schedule in late April. The project cost about NT$617 million (US$19.2 million), with the military covering the full cost.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said the new road would make it easier to move troops, equipment, and supplies. He added that it would also improve farm transport, road conditions, and safety for nearby residents.
The Army Artillery Training Command moved to the Tangshan base on Dec. 31. The new site provides larger training areas and more modern facilities for military personnel and trainees.
To improve access to the relocated base, Tainan also launched Red Bus Route 15 between Guanmiao Bus Station and the Tangshan base. The route serves nearby schools, parks, temples, residential areas, and other community facilities.
Passengers can transfer at Guanmiao Bus Station to services for central Tainan, Chi Mei Hospital in Yongkang, and Tainan HSR Station. The city said the new route would make public transportation more convenient in the Guanmiao area.
